If this is redemption, why do I bother at all? There’s nothing to mention, and nothing has changed Still I’d rather be working for something, than praying for the rain So I wander on, until someone else is saved
Rory Hawthorne has never quite forgiven life for the things it has taken from its family. His father was the first thing. And then his brother.
Gale never died, of course, and Rory knows he tries his best to care for the family in any way he can. But it just feels like Gale has abandoned them to the revolution. He doesn’t understand the way Gale sees it - that the family can best be protected by defeating the Capitol. And though Rory looks up to his brother, he’s not quite sure how to speak with him about this.
Still, Rory undertands, in a way, the need to see the downfall of the Capitol. He will never forget hearing Prim’s name called at the Reaping, or watching Katniss volunteer. He will never forget the bombing of District Twelve, the horrible sights and sounds and smells. If nothing else, he wishes to treat the Capitol the same way they treated DIstrict Twelve.
Though Rory puts on a brave face, pretending to be brash and rebellious and devil-may-care, it’s all a facade. When no one was looking, his favorite thing to do at home was to read his father’s old book of myths, legends, and fairy-tales, hidden from the public for as long as Rory could remember. From these tales, he learned of honor and bravery and other things the Capitol had long since tried to stamp out. And now, Rory wants nothing more to be a good soldier - a modern knight. So, though his mother tries to keep him from training, Rory goes without fail. They hurt Prim, they hurt Madge, they could very well hurt Posy. And that’s something that Rory just cannot stomach.
Rory, due to his diligence and some amount of natural talent, has moved quickly through training. He is in the last stages, now, and will soon be a full-fledged District Thirteen rebel. He is currently trying to persuade Gale and Katniss to let him come on the next major mission - the kidnapping of the Tributes from the Captol trains. So far, he’s had no luck. But he has noticed a glimmer in Gale’s eyes that’s something like pride, and he hopes that his brother will relent. He knows, though, that the more Gale wants something, the more Katniss will fight against it. He doesn’t quite understand what happened between his brother and Katniss, but he knows what it is, now. And he plans to play both sides until he gets his way.
Because if there’s something that Rory shares with his brother, it’s the ability to sink his teeth into something and not let go.
When he isn’t training, Rory spends as much time as he can with Prim and Posy. He is quite protective of the girls, and very gentlemanly around them. His greatest ambition of every day is to make Prim smile. A real smile, too, not one of the fake forced ones she’s taken to, lately.
